From the 15th -23rd March 40 students and 5 members of staff travelled to Obertauern in Austria. They were off on their annual school ski holiday to Austria!
The group travelled by executive coach. Leaving school early on Friday morning and, following an smooth journey by coach and cross channel ferry, arrived at the Youth Hotel Schaidberg on early Saturday afternoon.
After settling into rooms and freshening up the children walked across to the ski hire shop to collected their equipment, before having dinner, an introduction to the hotel and an early night !
Sunday
Sunday was the 1st day for skiing and, following a buffet breakfast at 8am the children met outside the hotel in their instruction groups for skiing.
The children were divided into 4 groups based on ability and friendships- we had two groups of beginners, one who had done about a week and one group of ‘experts’ !
The beginners spent their first morning getting used to walking about on skis and the more capable groups began to explore the resorts.
The hotel is so close to the ski area that the group was able to come home for lunch, an opportunity to take boots of for a while and enjoy a hot 3 course meal.
Each day the beginners were able to gain in confidence. By day 2 and 3 they were able to master first the drag lifts then the chairlifts, exploring the blue runs near to our hotel. The more experienced groups travelled further afield, enjoying the wide range of skiing available in this excellent high level resort.
During the week we had a variety of weather conditions. The beginning and end days were warm and sunny and the middle days brining more mixed conditions, including some heavy snow, poor visibility and quite strong winds. These varied condition gave everyone good opportunities to develop their ‘whole mountain’ skills which will be useful in the future.
Evening Entertainment
Each evening, after dinner, the group took part in some social activities. These included quiz night, Austrian 9 pin bowling and highlights such as night skiing on floodlit slopes and a visit to the fantastic Therme Amade water centre which has indoor and outdoor pools and slides !
By the end of the week all the groups had sufficient skills to explore across the resort. Even the first timers managing to successfully ski some challenging red runs.
The week ended with a presentation evening and final night disco/party, enjoyed by all. An early breakfast on Friday morning and a journey back through Austria, Germany and France to Calais, the ferry and a journey back through England to the Fylde Coast.
